Help Me Help Us Raise The Quality Of Life For Those With Epilepsy!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, epilepsy affects 3.4 million people at any given point in time. Of those, it is estimated that 1 out of 5 suffer from epilepsy alone. That's almost 700,000 people who constantly face the possibility they may wake from a seizure completely alone. We can help. Together, we can work to increase their quality of life.

After A Seizure; the postictal phase

The minutes and hours immediately after we wake from a seizure, also called the postictal phase, are extremely challenging. When alone, these challenges are even more difficult. We need something available to us that helps us recover from a seizure safely. We need the ability to prepare for this eventuality and have a plan we can execute without much effort. During that time, we may not even know we had a seizure. To have access to an app or other tool at that moment is crucial to alleviating some of the stress and anxiety involved in the looming possibility of an epileptic seizure.

The Vision

This is a vision I take personally as I also suffer from epilepsy and I live alone. The time after waking from a seizure is referred to as the postictal phase. We are very vulnerable during this time which lasts from minutes to hours. After waking, many of us don’t know what happened. We find ourselves on the floor, bleeding from the mouth, in significant pain and often fading in and out of consciousness. Everyone has a different experience, but we all need something to help us reconnect and feel safe. The vision of helpme-helpus.org is to create an app that can be easily accessed even if our thoughts aren’t clear. The objective is to allow someone to program whatever it is they need to help them during this traumatic time. That could be music, sounds, pictures, a recording of a loved one or even an automatic phone call to someone you care about. Just knowing these options are available will be comforting. The ultimate goal is to provide a better quality of life for people who have epilepsy.
